Fly Fishing Information to Improve Fly Line Performance

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Stanley Stanton In this day and age there seems to be a different fly line for every piece of water in the lower 48. For example, one of the major fly line manufacturer offers at least 16 different types of fly lines, salt water, and fresh water; weights from 2 to 15 different colored lines, lines with different sink rates, plus anything a fly fisher could possibly want for in any type of fly-fishing situation. All fly lines are designed to get the fly to the fish; however, those wonderful fly lines can cause you problems if you dont know how to fix them. You may find when you put a new fly line on your fly reel that the line is twisted and sometimes even dirty. If you have ever tried to make a long cast with a twisted fly line, you soon found out that it is next to impossible because those twists will hang up at the first stripping guide. Please dont worry, there is an easy fix. Strip all the line off the reel and remove it from the backing, allowing it to lie in a straight line preferably on the lawn. Next, use mild dish washing detergent and warm water to make a wash clothe nice and soapy. Find the approximate center of the fly line. While firmly holding the fly line between the folds of the soapy cloth with one hand, pull and strip the line through the soapy cloth with the other hand working your way towards one end of the fly line. If you have held the soapy cloth tight enough, you should see the line coiling up as you walk along pulling the line through the cloth. You may have to repeat this process three to four times to get all the coils and twists out of one end of the line. Now repeat the process to the other end of the fly line and get the twists. This is more than just cleaning a fly line. Then, do the entire line several times, working from the reel end to the leader end using a wet cloth to remove any residual soap. If your fly line came with a line conditioner, now is the time to apply it as per the manufacturer instructions, otherwise dont put any type of dressing on the line because of possible damage it may cause. When you are finished, you should have a clean, straight fly line and one that will cast and fish like it was designed to do. If you tend to wet fly fish the same river from the same side for several weeks over the course of the summer, you may find that the twists will return. One reason is the flow of the water rolls the fly line along a small amount, creating a little twist every time you fish the fly down and across the current. Also, certain fly casting methods will also cause some twisting. So, at the end of three or four days of hard fishing or when you get line twists, you will need to use the soapy cloth method to get your fly line clean and twist free. Fly lines are just tools that we can use to get the fly to the fish, however, sometimes it is up to us to tune them up so they work properly. The End of the World

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By E. Raymond Rock The end of the world is coming. Scientists say that the sun will flare out in the future and envelope our entire solar system and all of its planets, burning them to a crisp! This sort of thing is happening now in other parts of our universe, so its not unusual, The earth is not unique. This planet we call home is a tiny dot revolving around a star, and this star is merely one of billions of suns clustered in a single galaxy. Multiply this one galaxy by uncountable billions of galaxies in possibly uncountable trillions of universes and the mind must take pause. Who can know what other unimaginable things exist in this material world, let alone the worlds we cant comprehend? The immensity of time and space seems endless, beyond conception. So eventually, our earth will no longer exist, and we are helpless to avoid this unless of course we can colonize intergalacticly, otherwise, all of our accomplishments will one day be erased. All things fashioned by our minds in physical existence, our art, our philosophy, our religions, will be lost forever. What accomplishment can survive this? Even if we colonize the entire universe, there are theories that the universe itself will crash in time, as the big bang turns into a big black hole. But maybe by then we will come up with some other way to save ourselves . . . maybe not. We must bow to our vulnerability as organic forms. So, understanding all of this, we look to the heavens, which we hope is above the chaos down here. After all, if there is no spiritual dimension above, alongside, or under our universe, then atheists certainly have a point at the end of life is the big eternal sleep! But our flimsy mortal senses cant experience the spiritual dimension to the extent that we can say, There it is! So, we look to a religion that will insure our survival, a religion not too difficult, because we cant fail in this. We therefore choose a religion thats easy, we believe whatever they tell us, we take it as our truth, and we secure our little selves. But are we securing ourselves . . . or fooling ourselves? Fear can cause us to do desperate things and believe almost anything. Our deepest fear is that we will disappear, and we cant let that happen; were much too important. Therefore, we follow whatever mysteries, miracles, doctrines, rituals, or magic that will insure our immortality. And things are good again but when viewed from an unbiased perspective, all of this is very immature and childish. Regardless of our strong beliefs, and no matter our spiritual experiences, we must honestly admit that we dont know. We cant know Reality, and therefore our illusions become our comfort zones. Its all based on faith, and faith depends upon whom we believe. The things that we can know for ourselves can only become known internally. External beliefs become irrelevant. We can know, for example, that the immortality of this self, a self that we think is so important, is irrelevant. The self is but an illusion. Think about it; if our self does not exist, in the way we believe it exists, and has never existed, except in our minds, what is left to become immortal? Nothing. Its only an illusion. This is the same self that is discussed in all responsible religions, the self that separates us from the Grace of God; the experience of God. Looking at it in this manner, what is there to dread? Nothing! And if we understand life from this perspective, we become unafraid. Instead of fighting life and attempting to puff up an ego that is non-existent, we can relax. We can live life fully as it should be lived, and no longer cower under a shadow of fear. This is the secret to life and the secret to happiness as well. It begins with the simple act of sitting quietly, discovering what exactly our illusions are, and then transcending them. Meditation or contemplative prayer is where we start, the beginning of a full life, a freedom that fears nothing; neither the end of the world, the end of the universe, nor the end of our illusionary selves. There is something so much greater; it is all of us and we are all of it a something that will survive the end of the world! Copyright E. Raymond Rock 2007. All rights reserved E. Prayer to Ganesha: On Religion and Writer’s Block

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By EM Sky For those who are unfamiliar with the Hindu gods, Ganesha is the elephant-headed god of overcoming obstacles. He also happens to be the patron god of writers. Apparently writer’s block has been around for quite some time. I realize that a belief in multiple “gods” is considered sacrilegious by some. Both Christians and Muslims, for example, are quite strict about their belief in the One True God. But these arguments have arisen more from semantics than from any underlying philosophical divide. Even if there is only One God, still there are many aspects of God–truth, justice, honor, integrity, trust, faith, joy, peace… Using the word “god” to depict the Hindu representations of the divine is really a misrepresentation of Hindu beliefs. Hindus believe that all reality is One. There is only One God because there is only One Everything. So I’m perfectly happy to call Ganesha the divine aspect of Mighty Faith–just one of many aspects of the One True God–if that will keep us all on the same page. Here’s a little prayer I wrote myself that I like to offer up to Ganesha whenever I’m stuck on a writing project: “Beloved and Mighty Ganesha… I’m stuck… Please help me… Amen.” Hey, if anyone in the Heavens is going to accept a minimalist prayer, it’s Ganesha. Writer’s bock is His Thing. I’m sure he understands. If you happen to know that I was born in New Jersey to Caucasian parents and that I am currently writing this blog from the heart of the Bible Belt, you might wonder what I’m doing praying to an elephant-headed Hindu god-slash-divine-aspect in the first place. Well, I read a lot. Hinduism is the world’s third largest religion, after Christianity and Islam, with over 800,000,000 followers. The Vedas, The Ramayana, and The Mahabharata–including The Bhagavad Gita–are all available on Amazon.com. Read enough about Hinduism and eventually you’ll run across Ganesha, also known as Ganesh or Ganapati. If you’re a writer, and you discover a god for overcoming writer’s block, you file that information away, just in case. If you pray to that god and you start writing again, that’s what’s known as conversion. But in all seriousness I haven’t converted to Hinduism. I don’t see the need. In fact, I refuse to belong to any one religion because after a while, the ones that want you to “convert” start asking you to give up all the others. I’m not giving up Ganesha. But I’m not giving up Jesus either. Or Mary or Archangel Michael or the Buddha or Kwan Yin for that matter. I believe in the One True God, and I believe in all His vast and beautiful religions. I guess that makes me a pan-religious monotheist. If that sounds like a mouthful, you could call me a Christian Buddhist Hindu Gaian follower of the Tao. I don’t mention Judaism or Islam because I haven’t yet felt called to study much about them, but I do believe in Moses and Abraham and I do believe that Muhammad was a True Prophet. I just don’t see what all the fuss is about in refusing to “take sides.” Somehow I can’t see the Great Masters of Earth all standing around in heaven arguing with each other. As far as I’m concerned, they’re standing around together and shaking their heads in perplexity. “They just aren’t getting it,” they’re saying to each other. “What are we going to do about all this arguing? That’s not what we were trying to do at all!” The real problem is this underlying attitude we hold to so tightly–this belief that one thing always has to be better than another. Why can’t we accept the fact that everything has its place? “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven…” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Well there’s a purpose for every matter under heaven too. And it’s time we made a little room in our minds–and in our hearts–for that idea. So here’s a prayer for the world tonight, another prayer I wrote myself, and I offer it up to the Heavens in all earnestness: “Beloved One True God, in all Your myriad Divine Aspects, please help us all who walk the Earth to learn to Love, Honor, and Cherish one another without any barriers of fear and without any errors of exception, as You have in Your Infinite Wisdom sent so many of Your children to teach us to do in Your name.” Amen. –EM Sky has been a math instructor for The Johns Hopkins University, a special effects technician in Hollywood, a project manager for BellSouth, and a rock climbing instructor in Atlanta. Cash Advance Loans Explained

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jackie_Smith]Jackie Smith In reality, there is none. All of these terms describe the same thing. They are interchangeable names for a short-term (generally about 2 weeks) cash advance. Typically, money is borrowed until the next payday and then paid back with fees. If the borrower cannot pay the money back when payment is due, the loan period can be extended which usually allows the next payday to occur before payment is due. Additional fees apply for extensions of payment. Typically, providers will grant 3 to 4 payment extensions. If done via the Internet, the amount borrowed plus fees can be debited from the borrowers checking account. How much money can be borrowed? An applicant can request as little as $100 and as a returning customer may qualify for as much as $1,500 in payday loans depending on the provider. Fees Average fees are about $20.00 per $100.00 borrowed for a period of 2 weeks. Requirements Most lenders require the applicant for a payday loan to have a verifiable source of regular income that has been providing between $1.000 and $1.200 after taxes per month for at least 3 to 6 months, some require that the applicant be employed full time. Minimum age to be eligible for a payday loan is 18 with most providers. Most agencies will not grant loans to applicants that have outstanding applications with other payday loan providers or will decline applicants that have outstanding applications with more than one other agency. The applicant needs to have a current checking account that has been open and active for about 90 days. If applying for a payday loan over the Internet, access to a fax machine is required by most payday loan providers to submit the application and verification items which usually include a bank statement and a copy of a voided personal check. However, there are companies that offer so called fax free loans, which are approved without verification items on the condition that all information given in the application can be verified, e. g. via the telephone. Five Tips For Black Hair Care

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Ololade Franklin Black hair is chemically the same as other types of hair, but it has a unique physical structure that requires special hair care techniques. If you have Black hair, here are some tips to help your hair look and feel its best. 1. Avoid overwashing your hair. Straight and wavy hair tends to get oily very quickly because of its structure. This is why it has to be washed quite often. Black hair is different. It doesn’t get oily quickly because of its tightly curled structure. This structure keeps sebum, the natural oil that the scalp produces, from flowing along the hair shaft in Black hair. That is why Black hair is dry, and that is why it should not be overwashed. Too much washing will cause it to dry out even further. 2. Use hair care products made specifically for Black hair. Black hair is drier and more delicate than other types of hair, and it needs lots of moisture to stay healthy. Many hair care products are designed to strip moisture out of the hair, and this is the opposite of what Black hair needs. 3. Avoid brushing your hair. Use a wide toothed comb, or your fingers, to work with your hair. Brushes can destroy Black hair by shearing it out of the scalp. 4. Avoid sleeping in hair accessories such as curlers, barrettes, scrunchies, head bands, etc. Wearing these kinds of accessories when sleeping puts unnecessary stress on the hair and can lead to hair damage. 5. Work with your hair to try and find a hairstyle that doesn’t put tension on your scalp. Many Black women suffer from traction alopecia from wearing tight braids, extensions, hair pieces, hair rubbers, and wigs. If worn frequently, these will pull the hair out and cause the hairline to recede. One style that is easy to do with medium length natural Black hair is to wet the hair, gently comb it, smooth it back and gather it into a scrunchie. Just be sure to take the scrunchie out at night. Another style for natural Black hair that is short in length is to wear a soft fabric headband around the head. Match the headband fabric to the color of your outfit for a nice look. Arterial Coronary Bypass Surgery

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Atul_Bahl] Atul Bahl Coronary Bypass Surgery (CABG) is one of the most commonly performed operation in the world. The first CABG was performed way back in 1964 and since then extensive research and continuous progression in understanding of the subject and improvement in technologies has taken place which has made this operation absolutely safe, when required. CABG is the surgical treatment of coronary artery disease and is supported by the extensive clinical experience, scientific research and ever evolving technologies. As coronary artery disease is threatening to become epidemic, by 2020 it is going to be the no.1 killer disease. Unfortunately in Asia, particularly in Indian sub-continent this disease is occurring at very early age and involving even females who were previously considered comparatively immune to this disease. One of the biggest drawbacks of any modality of treatment of coronary artery disease is the recurrence of disease. We are continuously in search of treatment which can delay reoccurrence of disease. One of the important contributions in this field is use of arterial grafts for bypass surgery. As with extensive clinical experience it has been found that left internal mammary artery which when anastmosed to LAD (most important artery of the heart) it doesnt get block in more than 85% of patients for 20 years. Taking clue from these results, we have started doing all arterial CABG, especially for patients who are young, so that he can live a longer intervention free life.Total arterial CABG is technically demanding and should be performed by professionals specially trained for this procedure. Besides you require excellent infrastructure, good anaesthesia, cardiology and other related sub-speciality back-up, preferably under the same roof. 5 Tips for Getting Kids to Eat Healthy Foods

Friday, November 16th, 2007

By Meri Raffetto Parents can help their kids to eat better, and make it fun! Here are some tips to increase your childs interest in healthy foods. 1. Bring your kids grocery shopping While in the produce section, let your kids pick out a new fruit or vegetable to try. Kids are more interested in trying new foods when they get to pick them out. 2. Prepare meals together Let your child be part of the preparation. Whether they mix something in a bowl or pour a sauce they will be happier to eat and try new foods when they played a part. 3. Incorporate fun foods Kids are drawn to foods that have different shapes, and bright colors. There are many fruits that can fall into this category such as kiwi or star fruit. You can also be creative! Instead of handing your child a whole orange, break it up into pieces and make a smiley face on the plate. You would be amazed what simple creativity can do! 4. Make desserts healthy You can still have dessert and make it healthy too. Instead of depending on store bought cookies and candy (which provide minimal nutrients), try dipping fresh strawberries in chocolate sauce, a fruit smoothie, or a berry cobbler. These choices may have some sugar but are also adding nutrients at the same time. Remember- everything is healthy in moderation. 5. When your child wants candy Candy is a once in a while treat. Try using one ounce of trail mix with a few m&ms instead of a whole candy bar. Be a role model for your children. If you enjoy physical activity and eat healthy your children will likely do the same. Encouraging physical activity and healthy food choices during childhood will help build these habits for a lifetime.
